About this exercise

The corn cob pull-up is an advanced bodyweight exercise that builds width and lateral strength in the back. At the top of each pull-up, the body shifts from side to side in a horizontal swaying motion — like nibbling along a corn cob — increasing time under tension and demanding greater control from the lats and biceps.

How to Perform

  • Hang from a pull-up bar with a pronated grip slightly wider than shoulder width
  • Pull yourself up until your chin rises above the bar
  • At the top, shift your body to the right so your head moves toward your right hand
  • Then shift your body to the left so your head moves toward your left hand
  • After completing both side shifts, lower yourself with control back to the dead hang
  • Each set of — pull up, shift right, shift left, lower — counts as one rep
  • Keep the core braced throughout to prevent excessive swinging
