About this exercise

The commando pull-up is an advanced bodyweight pulling exercise performed with a parallel (neutral) grip, where you alternate bringing each side of your head to the bar on successive reps. This variation challenges the lats, biceps, and core from alternating angles, developing balanced upper-body pulling strength.

How to Perform

  • Grip the pull-up bar with a neutral (parallel) grip, hands close together and one slightly in front of the other
  • Hang at full arm extension with your core engaged
  • Pull yourself up, bringing your right ear toward the bar on the right side
  • Lower yourself under control to the starting position
  • Pull yourself up again, this time bringing your left ear toward the bar on the left side
  • Continue alternating sides with each rep
  • Keep your elbows driving down and back throughout the pull
  • Avoid swinging or using momentum to complete the movement
