About this exercise

A seated calf-strengthening exercise performed in a chair with the feet resting against a wall. You alternately raise one heel at a time by plantar-flexing the ankle, working the calf muscles through their full range while the chair provides a stable seated base.

How to Perform

  • Sit upright in a sturdy chair positioned close to a wall, feet flat on the floor with toes touching or resting against the wall
  • Keep your back straight and hands resting on your thighs
  • Raise your right heel as high as possible by pressing the ball of your foot into the floor, contracting the calf
  • Hold briefly at the top, then slowly lower your right heel back to the floor
  • Immediately raise your left heel in the same manner
  • Continue alternating heels in a controlled, rhythmic pattern for the desired number of repetitions
