About this exercise

The captain's chair straight leg raise is a bodyweight core exercise performed on a vertical knee raise station. Keeping the legs fully extended throughout increases the load on the abs and hip flexors compared to the bent-knee version, making it a more demanding abdominal exercise.

How to Perform

  • Step into the captain's chair station and place your forearms on the padded armrests with your back against the back pad
  • Grip the handles and lift your body so you are suspended with your legs hanging straight down
  • Brace your core and keep your spine neutral
  • Slowly raise both legs in front of you with knees locked, lifting until your legs are parallel to the floor or slightly higher
  • Hold for a brief pause at the top, squeezing your abs
  • Lower your legs back to the starting position in a slow, controlled manner
  • Avoid using momentum or swinging your hips
