About this exercise

The captain's chair leg raise is a suspended core exercise performed on a vertical knee raise station or parallel bars with armrests. By hanging from the armrests and raising your legs, you create strong abdominal contraction without placing stress on the spine.

How to Perform

  • Mount the captain's chair station by placing your forearms on the padded armrests and gripping the handles
  • Allow your legs to hang straight down with your back pressed against the backrest
  • Brace your core and slowly raise your knees toward your chest, or extend your legs and raise them to parallel with the floor for the advanced variation
  • Pause briefly at the top, feeling the contraction in your abs
  • Lower your legs in a slow, controlled manner back to the starting position
  • Avoid swinging or using momentum to lift your legs
