About this exercise

The calf stretch with hands against wall is a standing flexibility drill that lengthens the gastrocnemius and soleus. Pressing the heel firmly into the floor while leaning into a wall provides a reliable, adjustable stretch without any equipment. It is commonly used as a warm-up, cool-down, or recovery exercise.

How to Perform

  • Stand facing a wall, about an arm's length away, and place both hands flat against it at shoulder height
  • Step one foot back into a staggered stance, keeping the rear heel pressed firmly into the floor
  • Keep the rear leg straight and lean your hips gently toward the wall until you feel a stretch in the calf of the back leg
  • Hold the stretch for 20–30 seconds while breathing steadily
  • To target the soleus, slightly bend the rear knee while keeping the heel on the floor
  • Release and switch legs
