Cable Twisting Overhead Press

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Cable Twisting Overhead Press.

About this exercise

The cable twisting overhead press combines a single-arm overhead press with a rotational torso movement, engaging the shoulder, triceps, and core in a functional pattern that mimics rotational throwing or reaching mechanics. The cable provides constant tension and the twist increases oblique and core involvement compared to a standard press.

How to Perform

  • Set the cable pulley to shoulder height or below and attach a single-handle
  • Stand side-on to the machine and grip the handle at shoulder level with the near hand
  • Step away from the stack to create cable tension and brace your core
  • Begin pressing the handle upward while simultaneously rotating your torso away from the machine
  • Extend your arm fully overhead, reaching the handle slightly past your center line at the top
  • Hold briefly at the top, then reverse the movement with control
  • Return the handle to shoulder level as your torso rotates back toward the machine
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching
