About this exercise

A lat isolation exercise performed standing with a straight bar attached to a high pulley, keeping the arms straight throughout. The straight-bar path creates a consistent arc of tension across the lats and is an effective finisher for back training.

How to Perform

  • Attach a straight bar to the high pulley of a cable machine
  • Stand facing the machine with feet shoulder-width apart and a slight forward lean at the hips
  • Grasp the bar with an overhand grip slightly wider than shoulder-width, arms extended forward at shoulder height
  • Keeping both arms straight, pull the bar down in a wide arc until it reaches your thighs
  • Squeeze your lats at the bottom of the movement
  • Slowly return the bar to shoulder height under control
