About this exercise

The Cable Standing Wood Chopper is a rotational core exercise performed on a cable machine set to a high or low position. The continuous cable tension challenges the obliques, abs, and shoulders through a diagonal chopping pattern that mimics real-world rotational movements.

How to Perform

  • Set the cable pulley to a high position and attach a single-handle; stand perpendicular to the machine
  • Grasp the handle with both hands and step away to create tension in the cable
  • With arms slightly bent, pull the cable diagonally downward and across your body, rotating through the hips and torso
  • Finish with the handle near your outside hip, core fully rotated
  • Slowly return to the start position, resisting the cable's pull throughout
  • Complete all reps on one side, then switch to the other
