Cable Standing Supinated Face Pull (with rope)

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Cable Standing Supinated Face Pull (with rope).

About this exercise

The cable standing supinated face pull uses a high cable pulley and rope handle with a supinated (palms-up) grip to target the rear deltoids, upper traps, and external rotators. The supinated grip increases biceps involvement and promotes greater shoulder external rotation compared to a standard face pull.

How to Perform

  • Set a cable pulley to the highest position and attach a rope handle
  • Stand facing the cable stack with feet hip-width apart, gripping the rope with palms facing upward (supinated)
  • Step back until there is tension on the cable and your arms are extended toward the pulley
  • Brace your core and pull the rope toward your face, separating your hands as they reach ear level
  • As you pull, rotate your wrists so your palms face the ceiling at the peak of the movement
  • Pause with elbows flared and hands beside your temples
  • Slowly extend your arms back to the start under control, maintaining the supinated grip
