About this exercise

The cable standing one-arm serratus crunch isolates the serratus anterior and oblique on one side at a time, allowing you to address any strength imbalances between sides. Pulling a high-pulley cable with a single arm while crunching the torso laterally creates intense unilateral activation of the lateral abdominal wall.

How to Perform

  • Attach a single D-handle to a high pulley cable machine and stand sideways to the machine
  • Grasp the handle with the hand nearest the machine, arm raised above your head
  • Step away from the machine to create tension on the cable
  • Exhale and crunch your torso down and away from the cable, contracting the oblique on the working side
  • Focus on the lateral crunch motion rather than rotating the torso
  • Slowly return to the starting position, allowing a full stretch at the top
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching to the other
