Cable Standing Leg Curl

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Cable Standing Leg Curl.

MediumHamstrings

About this exercise

The cable standing leg curl isolates the hamstrings one leg at a time using a low pulley cable with an ankle strap. Standing upright shifts the hip position compared to the prone machine version, providing a slightly different stimulus and engaging the glutes as stabilizers throughout the movement.

How to Perform

  • Attach an ankle strap to the low pulley cable and secure it around one ankle
  • Stand facing the machine, holding the frame for balance, with your feet hip-width apart
  • Shift your weight to the non-working leg, keeping that knee soft
  • Keeping your thigh stationary and vertical, curl your working leg up by bending the knee
  • Squeeze the hamstring at the top of the movement, bringing the heel toward the glute
  • Slowly lower the foot back to the starting position under control
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching legs
