Cable Standing Hip Extension

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Cable Standing Hip Extension.

MediumGlutes

About this exercise

The cable standing hip extension isolates the glutes and hamstrings by extending one leg backward against cable resistance using a low-pulley machine with an ankle strap attachment. Working one leg at a time allows for focused glute activation and helps correct muscular imbalances between sides.

How to Perform

  • Attach an ankle strap to the low pulley of a cable machine and fasten it around one ankle
  • Stand facing the machine, holding the frame lightly for balance
  • Keep a slight bend in the standing leg and maintain an upright posture
  • Extend the working leg straight back and upward, squeezing the glute at the top
  • Avoid rotating the hips or arching the lower back excessively
  • Slowly return the leg to the starting position under control
  • Complete all reps on one leg before switching to the other
