About this exercise

The cable standing close grip row is a back exercise performed upright at a low pulley cable station, using a close, neutral grip to emphasise the mid-back and lats while also engaging the biceps and rear delts. The standing position requires greater core stabilisation compared to a seated row variant.

How to Perform

  • Attach a V-handle or close-grip bar to the low pulley and set an appropriate weight
  • Stand facing the machine with feet shoulder-width apart and knees slightly bent
  • Grasp the handle with both hands using a neutral (palms-facing) grip
  • Hinge slightly at the hips and brace your core to create a stable base
  • Retract your shoulder blades and pull the handle toward your lower abdomen
  • Keep your elbows close to your sides and avoid shrugging the shoulders
  • Squeeze the mid-back at peak contraction, then slowly extend the arms back out
  • Maintain an upright torso and resist rotating the hips throughout the movement
