About this exercise

The cable standing backhand is a rotational core exercise that mimics the mechanics of a tennis backhand swing. Performed at a cable machine, it trains the obliques and core to generate and resist rotational force, making it effective for both sports conditioning and functional core strength.

How to Perform

  • Set the cable pulley to approximately shoulder height and attach a single D-handle
  • Stand sideways to the machine with the cable on the side of your working hand, and grasp the handle
  • Take a step away from the machine to create tension on the cable
  • Begin with your arm extended toward the machine and your torso slightly rotated in that direction
  • Rotate your torso away from the machine, sweeping the handle across your body in a controlled backhand motion
  • Keep your hips relatively square and let the rotation come primarily from the torso and obliques
  • Return to the start position under control and complete all reps before switching sides
