About this exercise

The Cable Shoulder 90-Degree Internal Rotation is a rotator cuff exercise performed with the arm abducted to 90 degrees and the elbow bent to 90 degrees. From this elevated position, the forearm rotates downward and inward against cable resistance, training the subscapularis and anterior rotator cuff in a mechanically demanding position.

How to Perform

  • Set the cable pulley to elbow height and attach a single D-handle
  • Stand side-on to the cable machine and grasp the handle with the arm farthest from it
  • Lift your upper arm out to the side until it is parallel to the floor (90 degrees abduction)
  • Bend your elbow to 90 degrees so your forearm points toward the ceiling
  • Keeping your upper arm still and parallel to the floor, rotate your forearm downward toward the floor
  • Stop when your forearm is parallel to the floor or at the limit of your comfortable range
  • Slowly return your forearm to the upright starting position with control
  • Complete all reps, then switch sides
