About this exercise

The Cable Shoulder 90-Degree External Rotation is a rotator cuff strengthening exercise performed with the arm abducted to 90 degrees and the elbow bent at 90 degrees. The cable provides constant tension as you rotate the forearm upward and outward, targeting the posterior rotator cuff muscles — primarily the infraspinatus and teres minor.

How to Perform

  • Set the cable pulley to elbow height and attach a single D-handle
  • Stand side-on to the cable machine and grasp the handle with the arm closest to it
  • Lift your upper arm out to the side until it is parallel to the floor (90 degrees abduction)
  • Bend your elbow to 90 degrees so your forearm points toward the floor
  • Keeping your upper arm still, rotate your forearm upward until it is parallel to the floor or slightly above
  • Pause briefly at the top of the movement
  • Slowly return your forearm to the starting position with control
  • Complete all reps, then switch sides
