About this exercise

The cable seated wide grip row is performed at a cable row machine using a wide overhand grip on a straight bar, pulling toward the lower chest. The wide grip emphasizes the upper back muscles, particularly the rear deltoids and mid-traps, while the lats are worked through a shorter range than a close-grip row.

How to Perform

  • Sit at the cable row station and attach a straight bar to the low pulley
  • Grip the bar with a wide overhand (palms-down) grip, wider than shoulder width
  • Sit upright with a slight forward lean, arms extended and shoulder blades protracted
  • Retract your shoulder blades and pull the bar toward your lower chest
  • Keep your elbows flaring out to the sides as you row
  • Squeeze your upper back muscles at the end of the pull
  • Slowly extend your arms back to the starting position under control
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
