About this exercise

The Cable Seated Reverse Shrug is a back exercise performed at a lat pulldown machine where, instead of pulling the bar down, the arms remain straight and the shoulders are actively depressed to engage the lower trapezius and stabilising back muscles. The cable provides constant tension throughout the range of motion.

How to Perform

  • Sit at a lat pulldown machine and secure your thighs under the pads
  • Grip the bar with an overhand grip, slightly wider than shoulder-width
  • Start with arms fully extended overhead and shoulders elevated toward the ears
  • Without bending your elbows, depress your shoulder blades downward
  • Hold the contraction for a moment at the bottom of the movement
  • Slowly allow your shoulders to rise back to the starting position
  • Keep your torso upright and core braced throughout
  • Repeat for the desired number of reps
