Cable Seated Neck Extension (with Head Harness)

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Cable Seated Neck Extension (with Head Harness).

MediumNeckTrapezius

About this exercise

The cable seated neck extension uses a head harness attached to a high cable pulley to apply constant resistance to the posterior neck muscles. Seated and leaning forward, you extend the neck against the cable load. The cable provides consistent tension throughout the range of motion, making it an effective isolation exercise for the neck extensors.

How to Perform

  • Attach the head harness to a high cable pulley and select an appropriate weight
  • Sit on a bench facing away from the machine and put on the head harness
  • Lean forward slightly from the hips, chin tucked toward the chest as the starting position
  • Extend your neck by lifting your head upward and back against the cable resistance
  • Hold briefly at the top of the movement, then slowly return to the start under control
  • Keep your torso relatively still — isolate the movement to the neck
  • Repeat for the desired number of reps
