Cable Seated Chest Fly

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Cable Seated Chest Fly.

MediumMiddle chest

About this exercise

The cable seated chest fly isolates the pectoral muscles by bringing two cable handles together in a wide arc from a seated position. Using cables maintains constant tension on the chest through the entire range of motion, unlike dumbbells which unload at the top. This makes it particularly effective for developing chest muscle definition and peak contraction.

How to Perform

  • Set both cable pulleys to approximately chest height on a cable crossover machine and attach D-handles
  • Place a bench in the center of the machine and sit upright, facing away from the weight stacks
  • Grasp a handle in each hand with a slight bend in the elbows and palms facing each other
  • Begin with arms extended out to the sides at chest level, feeling a stretch across the pecs
  • Bring your hands together in front of your chest in a wide sweeping arc, squeezing the pectorals at the end point
  • Hold the peak contraction for a moment, then slowly open your arms back to the starting position under control

About the Cable Seated Chest Fly

The Cable Seated Chest Fly is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
