Cable Rope Seated Row

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Cable Rope Seated Row.

MediumRear shouldersTrapezius

About this exercise

The cable rope seated row uses a rope attachment on a seated cable row machine to target the middle back with a wider grip finish and greater range of motion. The neutral hand position from the rope reduces wrist strain and allows the elbows to flare out slightly at the peak contraction, maximizing lat and mid-back engagement.

How to Perform

  • Sit at the cable row machine and attach the rope handle to the low pulley
  • Place your feet on the foot rests and grip the rope with both hands, palms facing inward
  • Sit upright with a slight forward lean, arms fully extended and back engaged
  • Pull the rope toward your lower abdomen, separating your hands at the end of the movement
  • Squeeze your shoulder blades together at full contraction
  • Slowly extend your arms back to the starting position under control
  • Maintain a neutral spine throughout — avoid rounding or hyperextending the lower back
