About this exercise

The cable overhead tricep extension with a straight bar targets the long head of the triceps by placing the arms overhead, creating a deep stretch under load. Using a cable machine ensures constant tension throughout the entire range of motion. It is an effective isolation exercise for adding mass and definition to the back of the upper arm.

How to Perform

  • Set the cable pulley to the lowest position and attach a straight bar handle
  • Stand facing away from the machine and grasp the bar with an overhand grip, shoulder-width apart
  • Raise your arms overhead, elbows pointing forward, and position the bar behind your head
  • Brace your core and keep your upper arms stationary throughout the movement
  • Extend your elbows fully to press the bar overhead until your arms are straight
  • Slowly lower the bar back behind your head under control to the starting position
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
