Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Cable One Arm Pulldown.

MediumMiddle back

About this exercise

A unilateral cable exercise in which one arm pulls a high-pulley attachment down toward the hip, fully isolating the lat on the working side. Performing the movement one arm at a time helps correct strength imbalances and allows a greater stretch at the top of each rep.

How to Perform

  • Attach a single D-handle to the high pulley of a lat pulldown machine and select the appropriate weight
  • Sit or kneel facing the machine, grasp the handle with one hand using an overhand or neutral grip
  • Begin with the arm fully extended overhead, feeling a stretch in the lat
  • Pull the handle down toward the side of your hip by driving the elbow toward the floor
  • Squeeze the lat at the bottom of the movement
  • Slowly return the arm to the fully extended starting position under control
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching to the other arm
