About this exercise

The cable neutral grip chest press is a standing or seated cable exercise that trains the chest through a constant-tension arc. The neutral (palms facing each other) grip reduces shoulder stress and shifts emphasis to the mid-chest while still engaging the front deltoids and triceps.

How to Perform

  • Set both pulleys of a cable crossover machine to chest height and attach D-handles
  • Stand between the towers (or sit on a bench), grip a handle in each hand with palms facing each other
  • Step forward slightly to put tension on the cables, with one foot staggered ahead for balance
  • Start with your elbows bent at roughly 90 degrees and hands at chest level
  • Press both handles forward and slightly inward until your arms are nearly extended
  • Squeeze your chest at the end of the movement, keeping a slight bend in your elbows
  • Slowly return to the starting position under control, feeling a stretch across the chest
