About this exercise

The cable lying upright row performed with an SZ bar targets the side deltoids and upper trapezius with constant cable tension. Lying on the floor with feet toward the low pulley removes lower-body momentum and keeps the emphasis on the shoulders and traps throughout the movement.

How to Perform

  • Attach an SZ bar to the low pulley and lie on your back with your feet toward the cable machine
  • Grip the bar at shoulder width with a pronated (overhand) grip and extend your arms toward your feet
  • Pull the bar toward your chin, leading with your elbows high and flared out to the sides
  • Keep the bar close to your body throughout the pull
  • Pause at the top when your elbows are above shoulder level
  • Lower the bar under control back to the starting position
