About this exercise

The cable leaning lateral raise isolates the side deltoid by having you lean away from a low pulley, which keeps tension on the muscle from the very bottom of the movement. Performed one arm at a time, it builds shoulder width and definition.

How to Perform

  • Stand side-on to a low pulley and grasp the handle with the hand farthest from the machine
  • Hold the upright of the machine with your other hand and lean your body away from the stack
  • Keep your arm slightly bent and start with the handle near your hip
  • Raise your arm out to the side until it reaches about shoulder height
  • Pause briefly, then lower the handle back down under control
  • Complete all reps on one side, then switch arms
