About this exercise

The cable lat pulldown with a V-bar uses a neutral (palms-facing) grip that allows many lifters to achieve a stronger lat contraction and a more comfortable shoulder position compared to a wide overhand grip. The V-bar also recruits the biceps and rear deltoids as secondary movers.

How to Perform

  • Attach a V-bar handle to the overhead pulley of the lat pulldown machine and set the desired weight
  • Sit down and secure your thighs firmly under the knee pads, gripping the V-bar with both hands in a neutral grip
  • Lean back slightly from your hips and retract your shoulder blades
  • Pull the bar down toward your upper chest by driving your elbows toward your hips
  • Squeeze your lats at the bottom of the movement
  • Slowly allow the bar to travel back up until your arms are fully extended, maintaining tension throughout
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
