About this exercise

The cable kneeling side crunch is a unilateral core isolation exercise performed kneeling sideways to a high-pulley cable. By laterally flexing the spine against cable resistance, it directly targets the obliques with consistent tension throughout the full range of motion.

How to Perform

  • Set the cable pulley to its highest position and attach a rope or single handle
  • Kneel sideways to the cable machine with the working side facing the pulley
  • Grasp the handle with the hand on the cable side and hold it at the side of your head
  • Place your non-working hand on your hip or extend it out for balance
  • Exhale and crunch your ribcage laterally toward your hip, shortening the working oblique
  • Pause briefly at peak contraction, then slowly return to the upright starting position
  • Complete all reps on one side before rotating to work the other
