About this exercise

The Cable Kneeling Shoulder External Rotation isolates the posterior rotator cuff muscles — primarily the infraspinatus and teres minor — to strengthen shoulder external rotation. Performing this in a kneeling position reduces cheating through the lower body and promotes strict, controlled movement.

How to Perform

  • Attach a single-D handle to a low pulley cable and kneel with the same-side knee down beside the machine
  • Grasp the handle in the hand farthest from the cable with your elbow bent to 90 degrees
  • Press your elbow firmly against your side and keep it stationary throughout the movement
  • Rotate your forearm outward and upward away from your body, moving only at the shoulder joint
  • Continue rotating until your forearm is roughly parallel to the floor or as far as comfortable
  • Slowly lower the handle back to the starting position under full control
  • Complete all reps on one side, then switch sides and repeat
