Cable Incline Y-Raise with Back Support

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Cable Incline Y-Raise with Back Support.

MediumRear shouldersTrapezius

About this exercise

A prone cable Y-raise performed on an incline bench with the torso fully supported. The movement targets the lower and middle trapezius along with the posterior deltoid, making it an excellent accessory exercise for shoulder health and upper-back posture. The incline support eliminates momentum and maintains constant cable tension.

How to Perform

  • Set an adjustable bench to a 30–45° incline and position both cable pulleys at their lowest setting
  • Lie face down on the bench with your chest and abdomen fully supported and feet resting on the floor
  • Grasp one cable handle in each hand with palms facing the floor, arms hanging straight down
  • Raise both arms simultaneously in a Y shape — angled roughly 30° outward from the line of your head
  • Squeeze your shoulder blades together and feel the traps engage at the top
  • Slowly lower your arms back to the starting position under control
  • Keep your neck neutral and avoid shrugging your shoulders throughout
