About this exercise

Cable hip abduction is a standing unilateral exercise that uses a low-pulley cable with an ankle strap to isolate the glutes and outer thigh. The constant cable tension throughout the range of motion provides effective stimulus for the gluteus medius and tensor fasciae latae.

How to Perform

  • Attach an ankle strap to the low pulley and fasten it around the ankle of your working leg
  • Stand sideways to the cable machine with your non-working side closest to it
  • Hold the machine frame lightly for balance and stand with a slight bend in the supporting knee
  • Brace your core and sweep the working leg out to the side in a controlled arc
  • Lift until your thigh reaches roughly 45 degrees or a comfortable range of motion
  • Pause briefly at the top to squeeze the outer hip and glutes
  • Slowly lower your leg back to the starting position without letting it cross in front of the other foot
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching
