About this exercise

The cable half-kneeling external rotation press is a shoulder health and stability exercise that combines a rotator cuff external rotation with an overhead press in one fluid movement. Performed in the half-kneeling position, it also challenges core stability and hip alignment while strengthening the shoulder through a full functional range.

How to Perform

  • Set a cable pulley to shoulder height and attach a single-handle
  • Kneel on the knee closest to the cable machine with the opposite foot forward (half-kneeling stance)
  • Grasp the handle with the arm nearest the cable, elbow bent to 90 degrees and upper arm parallel to the floor
  • Brace your core and keep your hips square throughout the movement
  • Externally rotate your shoulder by lifting your forearm upward until your hand points toward the ceiling
  • From the rotated position, press the handle upward and slightly outward to full arm extension
  • Reverse the motion — lower the arm, internally rotate back to the start — under control
  • Complete all reps on one side, then switch sides
