About this exercise

A unilateral lower-body exercise using cable resistance that emphasizes glute activation during the step-up motion. The cable provides constant tension and encourages an upright torso position, maximizing glute recruitment throughout the movement.

How to Perform

  • Attach a handle to a low pulley cable machine and place a sturdy step or box directly in front of it
  • Hold the cable handle in one hand and place the same-side foot firmly on top of the step
  • Drive through the heel of the elevated foot, squeezing the glutes to push yourself up onto the step
  • Stand tall on the step with both feet at the top
  • Slowly lower your trailing foot back to the floor with control
  • Complete all reps on one leg before switching sides
