Close Grip Lat Pulldown

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Close Grip Lat Pulldown.

MediumMiddle back

About this exercise

The cable close grip front lat pulldown uses a narrow, neutral-grip handle on a lat pulldown machine to pull the bar to the front of the chest. The close grip places the biceps in a strong position and targets the lower lats with a pronounced stretch at the top, making it an excellent isolation movement for back width and thickness.

How to Perform

  • Attach a close-grip or V-handle to the lat pulldown machine and adjust the thigh pad to secure your legs
  • Sit facing the machine, grasp the handle with a neutral close grip, and extend your arms fully overhead
  • Lean back slightly (approximately 10–15 degrees) and keep your chest up
  • Retract your shoulder blades and pull the handle down toward your upper chest, driving your elbows toward your hips
  • Squeeze the lats hard at the bottom of the movement
  • Slowly allow the handle to rise back to the starting position with arms fully extended
  • Repeat for the desired number of reps
