Cable Alternating Fly

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Cable Alternating Fly.

MediumMiddle chest

About this exercise

A chest fly variation performed on a cable crossover machine where one arm at a time executes the fly motion, allowing a greater range of motion and improved mind-muscle connection in the pectorals. The continuous cable tension provides constant resistance throughout the arc.

How to Perform

  • Stand in the centre of a cable crossover machine with both pulleys set to mid-height
  • Attach a single-D handle to each cable and grasp them with a neutral or slightly supinated grip
  • Stagger your stance slightly for stability and hinge forward from the hips with a tall chest
  • Keep a slight bend in one elbow and sweep that arm across your body in a wide arc until your hand reaches the midline
  • Squeeze the pec at the peak contraction, then slowly return that arm to the starting position
  • Repeat on the other arm, alternating with each repetition
  • Continue for the desired number of repetitions per side

About the Cable Alternating Fly

The Cable Alternating Fly is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
