About this exercise

The Box Drop Jump is a plyometric exercise that trains reactive strength and landing mechanics. You step off a box, absorb the landing with a controlled quarter-squat, and immediately explode into a maximal vertical jump — developing the stretch-shortening cycle in the lower body.

How to Perform

  • Stand on top of a sturdy box with feet hip-width apart
  • Step off the box with one foot (do not jump off), letting both feet land simultaneously
  • Land softly on the balls of your feet with knees slightly bent and hips pushed back to absorb impact
  • Immediately transition the landing into a powerful jump, swinging arms upward to generate momentum
  • Extend fully through the ankles, knees, and hips at take-off
  • Land again with soft knees to absorb impact, reset, and repeat
