About this exercise

The bodyweight wood chop squat combines a full squat with a diagonal chopping arm motion, training the legs, core, and shoulders simultaneously. The twisting reach pattern engages the obliques and reinforces rotational stability, making it an effective functional conditioning and mobility exercise.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, arms extended overhead and slightly to one side
  • Lower into a squat while sweeping both arms diagonally downward toward the opposite hip
  • Reach arms through and across the body as you descend to the bottom of the squat
  • Drive through your heels to stand back up while sweeping arms diagonally back up overhead
  • Complete all reps on one side, then switch the starting arm position and repeat on the other side
  • Keep your chest up, core braced, and knees tracking over your toes throughout
