About this exercise

The bodyweight supported squat is a beginner-friendly squat variation where you hold onto a stable support — such as a squat rack upright, door frame, or TRX strap — to assist balance and allow a deeper range of motion. It is commonly used for squat pattern development and mobility improvement.

How to Perform

  • Stand facing a stable support (rack upright, pole, or straps) with feet shoulder-width apart and toes turned slightly out
  • Hold the support lightly with both hands at about waist height
  • Brace your core and begin to lower yourself by pushing your hips back and bending your knees
  • Descend until your thighs are parallel to the floor or as deep as comfortable
  • Keep your chest up and heels flat on the floor throughout the descent
  • Drive through your heels to stand back up, fully extending your hips and knees
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
