About this exercise

The Bodyweight Standing Scapula Row is a simple upper-back exercise that trains scapular retraction and protraction using only your body weight, typically performed against a wall or using gymnastic rings. It builds foundational shoulder stability and mid-back strength with no load required.

How to Perform

  • Stand facing a wall or hold onto gymnastic rings with arms extended in front of you
  • Keep your body in a straight line and your feet flat on the floor
  • Without bending your elbows, squeeze your shoulder blades together to draw your chest toward the anchor point
  • Hold the retracted position briefly, feeling the contraction in your mid-back
  • Slowly allow your shoulder blades to spread apart, returning to the starting position
  • Keep your core engaged and avoid shrugging your shoulders toward your ears
