About this exercise

A standing chest and shoulder mobility exercise where you place your hands behind your neck and rhythmically bring your elbows together in front of you, then open them wide to the sides. The movement alternately compresses and stretches the pectoral muscles and shoulder girdle.

How to Perform

  • Stand upright with feet hip-width apart
  • Place both hands behind your neck with fingers lightly interlaced and elbows pointing outward
  • Draw your elbows forward and inward until they touch or nearly touch in front of your face
  • Pause for a moment to feel the chest contraction
  • Open your elbows back and out to the sides as wide as comfortable, feeling the stretch across your chest and the front of your shoulders
  • Hold the open position briefly before repeating
  • Continue for the desired number of repetitions
