About this exercise

The bodyweight standing calf raise is a foundational lower-leg exercise requiring no equipment. Rising onto the toes against your own body weight targets the gastrocnemius and soleus, improving calf strength, endurance, and ankle stability. It is an excellent starting point for beginners or as a warm-up exercise.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet hip-width apart, toes pointing forward
  • Optionally place the balls of your feet on the edge of a step to increase range of motion
  • Place your hands lightly on a wall or stable surface for balance if needed
  • Lower your heels toward the floor to feel a stretch in the calves
  • Press through the balls of your feet and rise up onto your toes as high as possible
  • Pause at the top and squeeze your calf muscles
  • Lower your heels back down in a slow, controlled motion
