The bodyweight sitting alternating shrug is a simple upper trapezius exercise performed seated without any external load, alternating one shoulder at a time in a controlled shrugging motion. It is commonly used as a warm-up, rehabilitation drill, or active recovery movement to improve trap activation and shoulder mobility.

How to Perform

  • Sit upright on a bench or chair with feet flat on the floor and arms relaxed at your sides
  • Keep your spine neutral and gaze forward throughout the exercise
  • Shrug your right shoulder upward toward your right ear as high as possible
  • Hold briefly at the top, then lower it back down in a controlled manner
  • Immediately shrug your left shoulder upward in the same fashion
  • Continue alternating sides for the desired number of repetitions per side
