About this exercise

The bodyweight single leg squat with support is an assisted variation of the pistol squat where one hand holds onto a fixed surface for balance, allowing the lifter to focus on quad strength and hip mobility without the full balance demand. It serves as an effective progression toward the unsupported pistol squat.

How to Perform

  • Stand beside a rack, wall, or sturdy surface and hold it lightly with one hand for balance
  • Extend the opposite leg straight in front of you at approximately hip height
  • Slowly lower yourself by bending the standing knee, pressing your heel into the floor
  • Descend until your thigh is parallel to the floor or deeper if mobility allows
  • Keep your torso upright and the standing knee tracking over your toes
  • Drive through the heel to press back up to the starting position
  • Complete all reps on one leg before switching sides
