About this exercise

The bodyweight single leg squat, commonly known as a pistol squat, is an advanced unilateral lower-body exercise that requires significant quad strength, hip mobility, and balance. The non-working leg is extended straight in front throughout the movement.

How to Perform

  • Stand on one leg with the other leg extended straight in front of you at approximately hip height
  • Extend your arms forward for counterbalance
  • Slowly lower yourself by bending the standing knee, keeping the heel pressed into the floor
  • Descend as deep as possible while keeping the extended leg off the ground
  • Maintain an upright torso and keep the standing knee tracking over your toes
  • Drive through the heel of the standing foot to return to the starting position
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching legs

About the Pistol Squat

The Pistol Squat is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
