About this exercise

The bodyweight single leg Romanian deadlift is a unilateral hip-hinge exercise that strengthens the hamstrings and glutes while challenging balance and proprioception. Performing it without any load makes it accessible for beginners and serves as an effective warm-up or rehabilitation movement.

How to Perform

  • Stand on one foot with a slight bend in the standing knee, arms hanging in front of you
  • Brace your core and keep your back straight throughout the movement
  • Hinge at the hip, simultaneously lowering your torso forward and raising your free leg behind you
  • Continue until your torso and free leg are roughly parallel to the floor, or as far as your hamstring flexibility allows
  • Keep your hips level — do not rotate the pelvis open
  • Drive through the heel of the standing leg to return to the upright starting position
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching legs
