About this exercise

A side-lying bodyweight exercise where you raise one arm against gravity, isolating the lateral deltoid with no additional equipment. Because the only resistance is the arm's own weight, this is an excellent low-load option for shoulder rehabilitation, beginners, or high-rep endurance work.

How to Perform

  • Lie on your side on a flat surface with your body in a straight line and your lower arm supporting your head
  • Keep the top arm straight along your side, palm facing down
  • Slowly raise the top arm upward, keeping it straight, until it points toward the ceiling
  • Pause briefly at the top and feel the contraction in the outer shoulder
  • Lower the arm back to your side in a controlled manner
  • Complete all reps on one side, then switch and repeat on the other side
