About this exercise

The Side Squat with Towel is a lateral mobility and strength drill where one foot rests on a towel placed on a smooth floor. As you slide that foot outward, you squat down onto the stationary leg, combining a deep inner-thigh stretch with a unilateral squat pattern.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet hip-width apart and place one foot on a folded towel on a smooth floor
  • Keep the stationary foot planted firmly with toes pointing forward
  • Slowly slide the towel foot out to the side while bending the stationary knee into a squat
  • Lower your hips until you feel a comfortable stretch in the inner thigh of the sliding leg
  • Pause briefly at the bottom, keeping your chest tall and back flat
  • Drive through the heel of the stationary leg to return to the start, sliding the towel foot back in
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching
