About this exercise

A foundational bodyweight exercise in which you step backward into a lunge, developing single-leg strength, balance, and coordination. The rear lunge places less shear force on the knee than a forward lunge, making it an accessible option for beginners and a staple movement in lower-body training.

How to Perform

  • Stand tall with feet hip-width apart and hands on your hips or held in front for balance
  • Step one foot back and lower your rear knee toward the floor, stopping just before it touches
  • Keep your front shin vertical and your torso upright throughout the movement
  • Ensure your front knee stays aligned over your ankle and does not cave inward
  • Push through your front heel to bring your rear foot back to the starting position
  • Alternate legs or complete all reps on one side before switching
