About this exercise

The bodyweight half sissy squat is a quad-dominant knee-flexion exercise performed over a limited range of motion, with one hand on a wall for balance. By leaning back and allowing the knees to travel well forward over the toes, it places intense tension on the quadriceps with minimal hip involvement.

How to Perform

  • Stand upright facing slightly away from a wall, with one hand lightly touching the wall for support
  • Place feet hip-width apart with heels flat or slightly raised on toes
  • Begin to lean the torso back while simultaneously pushing the knees forward over the toes
  • Lower to roughly half the depth of a full sissy squat, keeping the body rigid from knees to shoulders
  • Pause briefly at the bottom, feeling a deep stretch in the quadriceps
  • Drive the knees back and return to the upright start position
  • Repeat for the desired number of reps
